General Tips

To stay healthy when you have diabetes, here’s what to do:
  • Follow your meal plan.
  • Follow your exercise and activity routine.
  • Take your medicines as directed.
  • Test your blood glucose regularly. Test more often when you are sick.
  • Keep your blood glucose as close to normal as possible. Blood glucose should be 70 to 130 before meals and no higher than 180 after meals. A1c test should be less than 7%.
  • Keep your blood pressure near normal. Try to keep it under under 140 / 80.
  • Keep your blood fats (cholesterol and other blood fats) near normal. Recommended target for total cholesterol is under 200, LDL under 100, HDL above 40 (men) and 50 (women), and triglycerides under 150. 
  • Do not smoke.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol.
  • Lose excess weight.
  • Check your feet and skin daily.
  • Brush and floss your teeth daily.
  • See your doctor regularly for:
      • Blood tests
      • Urine tests
      • Foot exams
      • Dilated eye exam
      • Blood pressure checks
  • See your dentist twice a year.
  • Get a flu shot every year.
  • Ask your doctor about getting a pneumonia vaccine.
  • Plan ahead for safe travel.
  • Meet often with the members of your health care team.
  • Keep updating your diabetes education.

Skin Care Tips

Diabetes may lead to skin problems that range from itching to infections that are hard to control. To reduce your chances for getting skin problems, take good care of your skin every day:
  • Bathe daily with mild soap and lukewarm water.
  • Apply a small amount of moisturizing lotion while your skin is moist.
  • Avoid scratches, punctures, and other injuries.
  • Wear gloves when you do work, like gardening, that may injure your hands.
  • Use sunscreen and good sense to avoid sunburn.
  • Prevent frostbite by dressing warmly. In very cold weather, avoid staying outdoors for long periods of time.
  • Treat injuries quickly. Wash all cuts and scrapes with soap and water. Cover them with a dry, sterile bandage.
  •  Call your doctor if a cut or scrape does not heal in a day or two or for any signs of infection:
      • Redness
      • Warmth
      • Swelling
      • Throbbing pain
      • Pus

Special foot care is necessary when you have diabetes. Poor blood flow, nerve damage, and trouble fighting infections can make foot problems very serious. You can help prevent major foot problems by a daily routine of foot care:

Check your feet daily

  • Look at the tops and bottoms of your feet. Use a mirror if necessary, or have a family member check for you.
  • Look for cuts, scratches, cracks, calluses, or blisters.
  • Look for changes in color, shape, or temperature.
  • Call your doctor if you notice injuries or other changes. Your doctor may tell you to see a foot doctor. A foot doctor is called a podiatrist (po-DYE-uh-trist).

Wash your feet daily

  • Use mild soap and lukewarm water (90 degrees to 95 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • Do not soak your feet. (Soaking may cause dryness.)
  • Dry your feet well, especially between your toes.
  • Use foot powder if your feet sweat.

Take care of your toenails

  • Cut your toenails after bathing, while they are soft.
  • Cut toenails straight across, not into corners. Then smooth your nails with an emery board.
  • Do not cut your own toenails if you have a hard time seeing or your nails are too thick. Have a podiatrist trim them.

Protect your feet

  • Wear comfortable leather or canvas shoes that fit well.
  • Do not wear shoes that may cause a callus or blister.
  • Break in new shoes slowly. Wear them one or two hours at a time.
  • Do not go barefoot, even indoors.
  • Wear clean socks or stockings every day. Cotton or wool socks are best.
  • Never use sharp tools, chemicals, or foot soaks to remove corns or calluses. Have a
    podiatrist do this for you.

Keep the blood flowing well

  • Exercise daily. Do foot exercises. Exercise gives you better blood flow.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Keep your feet warm. Avoid heating pads or hot water bottles, which may burn your skin.
  • Do not wear garters or stockings with elastic tops.
Remind your doctor and diabetes educator to examine your feet! Take off your shoes and socks every time you see them.

Diabetes (otherwise known as diabetes mellitus, DM) is described as a metabolic disorder in which your body cannot properly store and use fuel for energy.
The fuel that your body needs is called glucose (sugar). Glucose comes from foods such as breads, cereals, pasta, rice, potatoes, fruits and some vegetables and is also made in your liver and muscles. Your blood carries glucose to all of your body's cells to use for energy.
To use glucose, your body needs insulin. Insulin is the hormone made by a gland in your body called the pancreas. Insulin regulates blood glucose by stimulating the removal of glucose from the blood and its uptake into muscle, liver and fat cells where it can be stored for energy.
Sometimes your body does not make enough insulin or the insulin does not work the way it should. Glucose then stays in your blood and does not reach your cells. Your blood glucose levels get too high (hyperglycemia) and can cause diabetes or prediabetes. Prediabetes is when blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes.
Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause health problems.
  1. Your body makes too little or no insulin. This is called type 1 diabetes, insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM).
  2. Your body can not use the insulin it makes. This is called type 2 diabetes, non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM).

·     Encourage children to eat only when hungry, and to eat slowly.
·     Avoid using food as a reward or withholding food as a punishment.
·     Keep the refrigerator stocked with fat-free or low-fat milk and fresh fruit and vegetables instead of soft drinks and snacks high in sugar and fat.
·     Serve at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
·     Encourage children to drink water rather than beverages with added sugar, such as soft drinks, sports drinks and fruit juice drinks.

Why Breakfast Is the Most Important Meal of the Day

Dont quit your Break Fast:Keep Sodium Down, Potassium Up!!!!!!


#Excess sodium raises blood pressure in many people and has other harmful effects. People over 50, blacks and those with hypertension, diabetes or chronic kidney disease—that’s most adults—should limit sodium to 1,500 milligrams a day (about two-thirds of a teaspoon of salt).
#Everyone else should aim for less than 2,300 milligrams a day. At the same time, consume more potassium, which lowers blood pressure. Potassium-rich foods include citrus fruits, bananas, potatoes, beans and yogurt.



First, if you break the fast by giving into temptation you don’t need to start fasting all over again. I’ll cover more of that later. But just like when we sin, we don’t have to “get saved again,” the same goes with fasting. Continue on the journey and recognize that you detoured from the path. Now it’s time to get back on the road
Your first step to returning to the fast is to have a little meeting with yourself. Let your “wise self” interview that self-driven part of you to find out what happened. Why did you give into temptation? Where you not prepared? And so when you got hungry you caved and ate what was easy and available?
Maybe you are so focused on the food that you feel deprived. You’re not strong in the spirit, and rather weak in the flesh. So when you hear pizza or a hamburger or soda calling your name, you answer by giving in.
Perhaps you start having an internal conversation with yourself that goes something like this, “God knows I love Him. He doesn’t really care about what I eat. So I’ll be okay to change the fast and not give up some of the foods I like.”
The key is to find out why you broke the fast. What was going on? What happened? And what will you do “next time” so you are prepared, strong and able to withstand the temptation. These are valuable lessons you can learn about yourself and your approach to the fast. The thing is, the same reason you broke the fast is probably repeated in other areas of your life. So if you can learn the lesson and develop the muscles of the overcomer, then you are growing and getting stronger in your faith and in your life.
Once you’ve figured out your strategy for being better prepared, get back on the path and continue your spiritual journey. Spend time with the Lord and allow Him to speak to your heart and show you what you can do to stay strong and spiritually fed. Allow Him to fill you with His strength as you nourish your spirit from His Word.
And finally, shake off the disappointment, the guilt, and the discouragement. Wrap yourself in the robe of righteousness that Jesus bought for you on the cross and move on with Him at your side. Be thankful for what you have learned. Continue to learn and grow. And finish the race in joy and success! Remember, it’s not how you start that determines the outcome . . . it’s how you finish. And learning valuable lessons about yourself on the fast is all part of the value of this amazing spiritual discipline.
